What it costs around here

Angi puts the Chicago-area average for professional holiday lighting at about $600, with most jobs between roughly $260 and $940. Labor-only work usually runs $2 to $5 per foot of roofline, and $5 to $10 per foot with the lights included. Full-service designers with their own lights often start around $1,000.

What changes the price

  • Whose lights. Hanging yours is labor only. Lights supplied by the installer cost more
  • Feet of roofline. More feet, more clips and more time
  • One story or two. A second story needs a taller ladder and more care
  • Extras like bushes, railings or the garage
  • Where the outdoor outlet is. I plug into an outlet you already have, I don't add new ones

Included

  • Plastic clips only, never nails or staples
  • Every strand tested before it goes up
  • Timer set on an outdoor outlet you already have

Not included

  • New outdoor outlets or wiring, which is a job for an electrician
  • Peak work on steep roofs or anything over two stories

Ways to pay less

  • Use your own lights. You pay only for the labor
  • Bundle with a gutter cleaning and roof photos: $399+ for a single story
  • Book early. Installs run mid-November through December, and the early dates go first
